Advanced Placement English Language and Composition

The major purpose of this course is to engage students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. The student is required to read and analyze works of literary merit to examine how stylistic effects are achieved by writers’ linguistic choices. This college-level course meets the basic eleventh/ twelfth-grade English requirement for graduation and fulfills the “b” requirement of the UC/CSU Subject Area Requirements for students eligible for Honors English. Certain colleges may accept it for course credit or advanced placement of students who qualify on the CEEB Advanced Examination in Literature and Composition.
